Every year, almost 200 Alabama children under the age of 18 are told they have cancer. The kind of cancer and the type of treatment might vary, but there is one thing that remains true for all of these children – their lives are forever changed. That’s where Angel’s Hope steps in.

Angel was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma one month shy of her 16th birthday. When she ended up back in the hospital for her Sweet 16, she was devastated. She woke up that morning and wanted to do nothing but stay in bed all day. And I could do nothing to make her feel better. But her friends wouldn’t let her give up on her big day. They drove up from Tuscaloosa and threw her a surprise “Sweet 16” party at the hospital. That’s when the wheels started turning.

When a child goes through cancer treatment, they miss many of those special occasions that a lot of families take for granted – birthday parties, school dances, holiday events, and more. The Dream of Hope Project gives these children an opportunity to still create those special memories.

Through the Dream of Hope Project, every child in Alabama diagnosed with cancer would be eligible for a dream party/event for whatever occasion. When a child is diagnosed, a parent or legal guardian will fill out an application and someone from Angel’s Hope will be in touch to start the planning process. Angel’s Hope will plan everything (with ideas from the family/child), as well as pay for the event/party. The family just needs to show up and have fun.

Angel’s Surprise Prom was when she really started thinking about doing something similar for other kids going through cancer treatment.
